Pride has arrived, and Barcelona, ever as it has done, will throw a full-blown party in its honor where all are welcome and encouraged to attend. The city has grown to become one of the biggest Pride celebrations in Europe, and this year will be no different. Hoping to build on the success from last year’s record-breaking attendance of 380,000 people, PRIDE BCN readies itself once again to celebrate love. In order to help get you prepared, we have all the information you need to take advantage of the festival.

For those who don’t know, Barcelona was the first Spanish city to take part in the rise of gay rights movement, its first march taking place on Les Rambles in 1977. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that the city continues to be a focal point for the gay rights movement both here in Spain as well as in Europe.

Every summer since 2008, Barcelona has hosted the main Mediterranean LGBTQ Pride celebration. For more than a week, PRIDE BCN celebrates with both protests and festivities, making sure to keep up Barcelona’s commitment to fight for the rights and freedoms of the LGBTQ community.

PRIDE BCN 2019 has a lot on tap this year. While the Pride Parade is one of the main events, there will also be concerts and social and cultural activities including conferences, exhibitions, discussions, films and more. What makes 2019’s celebration particularly special is that June 28th, 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which went on to spark the gay rights movement globally back in 1969. Undoubtedly, Pride BCN will pay homage to this historic date.

While this is a festive, lively event that can be enjoyed by everyone, we can’t forget that the main purpose of Pride is to create more visibility and awareness of the fight for LGBTQ rights and to encourage acceptance and respect. This year’s theme is “We Are Family,” focusing on the idea that love comes in all shapes and colors, and that this is something to be celebrated, not condemned. Here are the themes from previous editions of PRIDE BCN:

2018 LGTBI refugees
2017 Homophobia in sport
2016 Trans people, as common as diverse
2015 Stop bullying LGTBI
2014 LGTBI rights
2013 The law against LGTBIphobia
2012 Support for same-sex marriage and claim of social rights
