WORLD PRESS PHOTO BRINGS BEST IN PHOTOJOURNALISM TO BARCELONA FOR 2020 EDITION

Photographic Social Vision has helped bring back the World Press Photo exhibition for yet another year! This Friday, the 13th of November, the best photos and multimedia pieces of the past year in international photojournalism will make their 5th stop on their global tour in Barcelona. In a year that has revolved around the COVID-19 pandemic and other tumultuous news stories, this is an exhibition you won’t want to miss.

The 2020 edition, which marks its 16th year at CCCB, covers topics such as citizen protests, the climate and environmental crisis, gender inequality and much more. From over 73,000 photos taken by over 4,200 international photojournalists, the judges have chosen 150 images as this year’s winners. The big winners are the Japanese author Yasuyoshi Chiba (Agence France-Presse), who won the World Press Photo of the Year for “Straight Voice,” and the French photographer Romain Laurendeau, who won the World Press Photo Story of the Year for “Kho, the Genesis of a Revolt.” By choosing these two winners, it’s clear that the judges have chosen to highlight the important role of youth in promoting change, and that social protests were a substantial part of the global narrative over this past year. The competition offers a collection of photos assigned to eight different sections, which are: Contemporary Issues, Environment, General News, Long-Term Projects, Nature, Portraits, Sports, and Spot News.

This year, due to the pandemic and the consequent reduction in capacity, the parallel activities and guided tours cannot be held in their usual format. As an alternative, a commitment has been made to the digital format. For the first time, it will be possible to enjoy online guided tours through Filmin (available to the platform’s subscribers and for rent to non-subscribers) and various exclusive content through the World Press Photo Barcelona.

For those of you who don’t know, World Press Photo, which has been around since 1955, is the world’s most prestigious photojournalism contest. Over the year, it will travel across the globe to 100 cities in over 45 countries, with an average of 4 million visitors. And, speaking from experience, it’s common to see bleary-eyed, somber faces walking out of the exhibition doors because, as is intended, this exhibition makes you think and reflect, owing to the fact that many of the images are powerful and poignant.
It’s one of our favorite exhibitions to attend each year, and we hope that you’ll make the trip to the CCCB to enjoy the 2020 edition!
